Rebecca Warren, Jean Rhys & David Plante

At the core of Shades of Pink is Rebecca Warren and Jean Rhys’s shared interest in addressing dominance and abjection with surgical precision and triumphant humour.

For this ublication, which presents a previously unpublished short story by Jean Rhys and David Plante, Warren gathered a sequence of images: closeups of the plinths that are an integral part of her destabilisation of monumental sculpture as well as fragmentary views of her studio, occasionally overlaying them with translucent quotes from Rhys’s text. The story, written in collaboration with David Plante towards the end of Rhys’s life, recounts, with typical Rhys levity, a chain of events leading to an embarrassing conclusion that had happened a few days before, during an afternoon the two writers spent together.
